Montegut and Point-Aux-Chenes Recreation District 6 on the ballot for October 20th 2007

Recreation District 6 was created in 1958 as a service for the community of District 6. The pool was built first and the gym followed later. For the past 50 years the only major renovations that have been done to the gym are a new roof in 2001, new bathroom in 2005, and a new 25 ton air conditioner in 2006.

Recreation District 6 is currently receiving 8 mills of Ad Valorum Taxes for the purpose of operation and maintaining they gym and surrounding property. A mill produces approximately $31,300. The present income of the gym is $249,958.00 in ad valorum taxes. The operating budget of the gym s approximately  $225.000.00 There is a small amount available for emergencies, which happens in our area.

On October 20, 2007 the Recreation District of Montegut and Point-Aux-Chenes will have on the ballot two propositions, one for bonds, the other to increase the maintenance millage to 10 mills. The bond millage will be to build a new softball/baseball complex, update the swimming pool, the tennis courts, and replace all necessary fencing in these areas.  Additional Playground equipment will also be purchased. The Increase in the maintenance millage will be to better maintain the additional improvements to the ball fields, the gym and the play areas.

The taxes for Recreation District 6 are mostly paid by the oil and gas companies, the businesses in Montegut and Point-Aux-Chenes, the camps on South Madison and some by the homeowners. Most homes in Montegut are not above the the $75,000.00 assessed value, so therefore do not pay taxes because they are homestead exempt. A house at $80,000.00 paid about $50.00 in taxes for  2006-2007.  The tax for the bonds will cost approximately $5.00 yearly for a house valued at $80,000.00
